Mallorca Underground

The history of how the Mediterranean Sea and the Balearic archipelago were formed indicates some of the many treasures that are hidden beneath the surface of Mallorca. Several hundred underground conduits, caverns and caves have been discovered throughout the island. The vast majority of them are not accessible, but luckily, there are a fair few that are.

Many of them are found on the island's east coast, such as the famous Caves of Drach, but there are also some truly amazing caves at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, such as the Campanet caves, just half an hour from our hotels in Port d'Alcudia.

1.- Campanet Caves

You might be surprised that you have never heard of them before. The Campanet caves might not be on the list of the most touristy caves in Mallorca, but they still deserve to top our small list since their location at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana and their rock formations are fascinating. In total, these caves offer up 3,000 m2 to discover: a magical world that reaches a depth of 1,000 metres in certain areas.

2.- Caves of Artà

Not the most famous caves either, but definitely some of the most spectacular, and also much less crowded than those in Porto Cristo. The caves of Artà are located in Cap Vermell, a short distance from the beautiful beaches along the Canyamel coast. Not only will you be able to enjoy these incredible underground treasures, at the end of the visit you will be awarded with a privileged view of the Mediterranean Sea as well.

3.- Coves Blanques – the White Caves

Among the Mallorcan caves we have to mention the white caves, very near Porto Cristo and neighbours of the Caves of Drach. The rock will surprise you with its very unique white colour, and an additional surprise is that they were inhabited by fishermen in the area up until a couple of centuries ago. They are located at the seafront, following the Porto Cristo Promenade.

4.- Génova Caves

The Génova caves are the smallest on Mallorca, but their formations are stunningly beautiful. They are located in Palma, less than half an hour by car from our hotels in Palmanova and our 5-star hotel in Andratx. Specifically, they are located in the Génova neighbourhood, which gives them their name, and their calcareous nature makes entering them like walking through a museum of nature’s own art: large columns, impossible figures, corridors and galleries... even underground pools.

5.- Hams Caves

Also located in Porto Cristo, the Hams caves are famous for being the first caves on Mallorca, and in all of Spain, to be opened to visitors. Inside these caves, the route runs through several caves with numerous galleries featuring beautiful ancient shapes that make them unforgettable. At the end of the visit you arrive at a lake where a small, live music concert is held.

6.- Caves of Drach

We have left them for last, but without a doubt the Caves of Drach are the most famous caves on Mallorca. They are also located very near Porto Cristo, and here you can walk a 1,200-metre route through four different caves and enjoy a huge lake painted in a thousand and one colours during visits, creating a dream world for the visitors' eyes.
