A 1,900 metre swim, 90 kilometres by bike and then a half marathon to finish. That is the challenge that will be facing almost 4,000 athletes from all over the world at the IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca event next Saturday May 11, one of the most fascinating triathlons of the calendar year, held once again this year in Puerto de Alcudia.

In previous posts we offered tips for optimising your performance in the IRONMAN event and recommendations for the event in Mallorca. We would now like to take the chance to share some fun facts about this major sports event and let you know how we spend the day at Zafiro Hotels.

The biggest Ironman 70.3 in the world

Puerto de Alcudia hosted IRONMAN for the first time in 2011, with 1,857 athletes taking part.

Ever since then, the number of athletes has grown, reaching 3,800 athletes last year, a success that will be repeated this year and which makes it the biggest Ironman 70.3 event in the world.

 Route and schedule for the event

This Saturday, athletes from all over the world will be taking on the following route:

• Swim: with a rolling start and a route extending 1,900 metres through the calm waters of Alcudia Bay, which are expected to be at a temperature of around 18ºC.
• Bike: A 90km route that starts and finishes in Alcudia Bay, passing through the heights of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains and on the flat through numerous villages in the island interior. Refreshments available at the 15, 31, 50 and 72km marks on a very technical and mountainous route for which the organisers recommend special precaution during the descents.
• Run: 5km plus two 8km laps to make a total of 21km on a flat, paved route alongside Alcudia Beach make up the last leg of this remarkable competition.

Once the race is over, 70.3 miles will have been completed, exactly half the 140.6 miles of a full IRONMAN event.

Athletes can register from Thursday, and on Friday at 6pm the IRONKIDS event for kids aged between 3 and 16 will be held. The awards ceremony will be held on Sunday.

This edition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca 2019 also comes with 60 qualifying places for the 2019 World Championship to be held in Nice in France.
