Mallorca & Menorca Guide

Mallorca: wine tradition, wineries and wines.

"Mediterranean" and "wine" are two concepts that are most certainly related. To be more precise when we are talk about "good wine" we are talking about the "Mediterranean diet”. Which is why, in recent years, Mallorcan wineries have been gaining prominence in the world of wine. The demand for Mallorcan wine is increasingly and it is not just the locals who are after it as it is now exported aboard. But take note! Many of the best Mallorcan wines can only be tasted in their cellars or at restaurants, so if you do decide to visit the island and you are a lover of the “drink of gods" then do not hesitate to make a visit o the wineries of Mallorca and taste the Mallorcan wines in the restaurants you visit.

The Mallorcan wines have two denomination of Origin (DO), as well as many local wines “vino de la tierra” and more and more Mallorcan wineries are producing “author´s wines". As we said before, Mallorca has two regions recognized as DO: Binissalem and Pla i Llevant. The latter was the first to receive recognition in 1993. This wine region extends from the east to the centre of Mallorca forming the first region with Denomination of Origin and it where you will find a great wine tradition with some of the oldest wineries on the island. It is here where you can enjoy the famous Mallorca Wine Express train in Santa María.

Mallorca has approximately 70 local wineries and over the last few years many of the winemakers on the island have opened their doors to the public for wine tastings and guided tours. One of the most famous wine tour is the Binissalem wine route where you can visit the wineries of the island´s central villages: Santa Maria del Camí, Consell, Binissalem, Sencelles and Santa Eugenia. Apart from the Mallorcan wine tours, lovers of good wine should not miss the fairs and days out designed and created for wine lovers to enjoy the Mallorcan wine traditions. The characteristics of Mallorcan wines according to their shades or variations are as follows:

  • Mallorcan wines that are classed as "vino de la tierra " are clean wines, with frank aromas unique to the grape of origin.
  • The white wines are yellow in colour from the palest shade of yellow to a golden yellow hue. They are well balanced, fresh and aromatic with mainly fruit and floral aromas
  • The red wines are of a high layer, with body and powerful aromas. Undoubtedly its aromas are influenced by the presence of red fruits.

Hotels and wineries in the north of Mallorca

Although the north of Mallorca is not recognized as DO nevertheless, it has several wineries that are worth visiting which along with their incredible landscapes of sea and mountain have become a unique wine experience on the island.

Alcudia hotels and wineries

From our hotels in Alcudia you can enjoy the beaches, the Alcudia marina, Mallorcan life and of course, the local wineries. Here at Zafiro Hotels we would like to recommend that if you are a lover of "the drink of gods" to visit the winery Celler Canyelles i Batle. Located on the road between Sa Pobla and Alcudia at the entrance to the Son Simó Vell estate it has 3,7 hectares planted with vines of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Do not forget to take a look at our hotels in Port d'Alcudia: Zafiro Palace Alcudia  our five star hotel for the most discerning  guests and  the Zafiro Tropic located in the midst  of  Port d'Alcudia and  only 200m from the beach.

Hotels and wineries in Muro

Not far from the Celler Canyelles i Batle is the Butxet winery, located in a remote and mountainous place between Muro and Can Picafort. According to several wine experts this winery may quite possibly have the honour of producing the best Syrah in Mallorca but you can´t go without tasting their other two red wines, Merlot and Cabernet. For accommodation in the area Zafiro Hotels would recommend the Zafiro Bahía, located in the heart of the Bay of Alcudia and in front of the beach of Playa de Muro.  With its 289 apartments and studios recently renovated and all fully equipped it is the perfect choice for a couple or a family holiday. However  if you would  prefer a hotel in Can Picafort, then the Zafiro Can Picafort is  perfect if you are looking for tranquillity and family fun time near the beach. Remember that  you can book all-inclusive at all of our hotels and enjoy a  carefree holiday staying  at Zafiro Hotels.
