The Mediterranean diet of Mallorca and Menorca

    July 2017
#Malloca Gastronomy #Menorca Gastronomy #4 star hotels Menorca

Based on the Balearic’s traditional fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, fish and  olive oil

The Mediterranean diet is famous and well respected all over the world. It is based on the consumption of seasonal vegetables, fruit and fresh leaves such as onion, tomato, peppers, cucumber, aubergine, courgettes, spinach, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, apricot, peaches, melons, watermelons and lots more other food  that are considered to be good for your health, in fact the Mediterranean diet is over a 1000 years old. There are other things that are essential to the Mediterranean diet and they are bread and other cereals, olive oil and vinegar and not forgetting beans and nuts, the Mallorcan almonds are the tastiest in the world! The food consumed on the island in generally low in fat with plenty of natural vitamins and antioxidants. The Mediterranean diet , known among the experts as  the balanced diet because  it’s so healthy!

The sea which surrounds Mallorca and Menorca has beautiful fresh fish with delicious flavours which are the main ingredients in many of the dishes in the Mediterranean diet such as “fish a la Mallorquina” served with vegetables, a true Mediterranean classic.  Wine also plays an important role in the Mediterranean diet and in recent years the vineyards of Mallorca having been winning some very prestigious prizes and the number of bottles consumed by both tourists and residents alike has increased two-fold, they ask for it in the local restaurants because they know that a good meal should always be accompanied by a good wine.

Now that’s a balanced diet! In Mallorca as well as Menorca there plenty of very  good restaurants inspired by the Mediterranean diet, some of which are Michelin starred, that offer their customers high quality ingredients which have been treated with great care  and attention and cooked in olive oil. Hotels also  offer native dishes in their menus and buffets for  those  guests who  have  travelled to Mallorca and Menorca  wanting  a  taste  of the Mediterranean diet.

At Zafiro Hotels it is a pleasure and almost an obsession of ours to provide our guests with the best the world has to offer and naturally this includes the Mediterranean diet which is very much valued by our guests thus  in the themed restaurants in the hotels within the Zafiro chain you will find some of them  specializing in the gastronomy of the Mediterranean which  not only includes the typical Balearic dishes of the Mediterranean diet and as well as others from the Spanish coast  but also dishes from Italy, Greece and other countries which share the Mediterranean  sea with the Balearic islands. The results are an exquisite cuisine based on healthy fresh ingredients which is ideal for the summer months when you are wanting a lighter and more refreshing diet.

The common ingredients of the Mediterranean diet are vegetables, fresh leaves, fruit, pulses and beans and other local products that are sold in the local markets, which have a great local atmosphere, all over the island, they then find their way to some of the gastronomic restaurants that can be found in certain tourist spots and in Palma along with the fresh fish from the coast, all cooked in wonderful olive oil and washed down with some local wine. The result is a diet that  is great for  your health low in fat and with  very high nutritious food. And on top of that the Mediterranean diet helps you to live a healthy lifestyle by consuming food and products low in fat using the irreplaceable olive oil and to make it perfect the diet is best accompanied with a little exercise.

The Mediterranean diet doesn´t make miracles ,well almost not, so don´t let this year go past without trying the Mediterranean diet  but do it where it  all began, in Mallorca or Menorca, right in the middle of the Mediterranean!
