Jaume Florit: how the winner of Ironman Mallorca trains
Winning an Ironman is every triathlete's dream. But achieving it on home soil, surrounded by loved ones and on the very roads that have shaped months of preparation, makes the victory even more meaningful.
That is how Jaume Florit, winner of the Zafiro IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca 2026, describes the experience. The young Mallorcan athlete from Muro crossed the finish line last May in 4:12:37, outperforming more than 3,000 competitors from around the world in one of Europe’s most prestigious triathlon events.
A well-earned triumph built on countless hours of training, discipline and perseverance, but also on lessons learned along the way and the ability to overcome setbacks.
Today, Jaume shares how he prepares for a competition of this magnitude, reveals his favourite training routes across Mallorca, and explains what aspiring participants should keep in mind if they are already setting their sights on the next edition of the Zafiro IRONMAN Mallorca, taking place on 8 May 2027.
If that sounds like you, keep reading.

A winning routine
Behind Jaume Florit’s victory lies far more than what spectators see on race day. There are early starts, long hours of swimming, cycling and running and, of course, meticulous attention to nutrition and recovery.
His training days begin early, averaging between three and four hours of training daily: “During the week, I’m usually up at 6:30am to train. I do my first session in the morning, another in the afternoon, and if there’s a triple-session day, I’ll combine two of them.”, he explains.
And what does he find most challenging? Winter: “Heading out to train on a cold morning when race day still feels a long way off isn’t always easy. There are days when motivation is hard to find, and that’s when you need the determination to stick to the plan."
But training is only part of the journey. The rest comes from working closely with nutrition and recovery specialists who ensure every aspect of his preparation is on track: “Meeting your nutritional requirements while maintaining a varied and healthy diet isn’t always straightforward. The same goes for understanding whether the sleep you’re getting is truly restorative and of good quality." This level of monitoring allows him to approach every training session with confidence and peace of mind.
According to Florit, preparation evolves significantly as race day approaches. Between six weeks and ten days before the event comes the most demanding training block. During this period, rest and nutrition become even more important and, as he explains: “You do very little other than train and recover”.
Training volume drops considerably during the final ten days. While some intensity is maintained across all three disciplines, the focus shifts towards recovery. “That’s the time to rest, recharge and arrive at the start line feeling your best.”
Essential in every training session…
- When training, Florit never goes without isotonic drinks and the carbohydrates needed to maintain performance and energy levels.
The toughest sections…
- For him, the most demanding parts of the race are the final 10 km of the cycling leg and the last 5 km of the run.
The importance of getting back up…
- His most difficult moment came at IRONMAN Alcúdia 2025, when he was leading the race but was forced to withdraw due to a mechanical problem with his bike.
His post-race celebration meal…
- After crossing the finish line, what he craves most is a complete burger with fries from Petit Figueret, followed by a well-earned dessert.
His recovery routine...
- Following a competition, Florit usually takes three to four days of recovery, with just one very light session each day. By the fourth or fifth day, he is typically back to training as normal.
Mallorca, the perfect setting
The Zafiro IRONMAN is a clear reflection of Mallorca’s appeal as a world-class destination for triathlon. In the latest edition, 89% of participants travelled from outside Spain, with the largest contingents coming from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Denmark and Norway.
For Florit, however, Mallorca is far more than the backdrop to this prestigious race or the island where he triumphed against more than 3,000 triathletes from around the world. It is home. The place where he grew up, where he discovered his passion for sport, and where he has spent years training and enjoying the journey since first taking up athletics at the age of 12.
Along that journey, his hometown has played a particularly important role: “Growing up in a place like Muro has been a huge advantage for my training. We have excellent facilities, including a great swimming pool, and there’s an endless variety of routes for both cycling and running. It’s a truly privileged environment".
And although his career has taken him on increasingly ambitious challenges, he admits that some of his greatest enjoyment still comes from returning to the routes he ran as a teenager. "Every time I train there, it brings back so many great memories".
The routes recommended by the champion:
- For swimming: Alcanada Beach, 3.5 kilometres from Puerto de Alcudia.
- For long cycling sessions: the Serra de Tramuntana, with ascents such as Sa Batalla, Puig Major and Sa Calobra.
- For the running leg: the Zafiro IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca course.
- The best views for training: Sa Calobra for cycling and the highways and backroads of Muro and Son Morey for running.
Tips for beginners
For those already looking ahead to the next triathlon in Mallorca, Florit’s advice is clear: train consistently and be patient. As he explains: “There’s no need to rush to reach your peak. Real progress comes from training consistently, day after day, while respecting your body’s limits."
That also means having the discipline to stay committed to the plan and keep showing up, even when the weather is less than ideal.
Just as importantly, recovery and nutrition should never be overlooked. In Florit’s view, they are every bit as essential as the training itself. The key, he says, is learning to listen to your body. To illustrate the point, he reflects on one of the mistakes he made when he was starting out: "I wasn’t eating enough, and I was far more focused on my weight than on the signals and sensations my body was trying to tell me."

Training in the north of Mallorca
For Florit, the north of Mallorca offers the perfect combination of year-round sunshine and a remarkable variety of routes, making it an ideal destination for both training and enjoying outdoor sport.
Guests staying at our hotels in Playa de Alcudia, Playa de Muro and Can Picafort can explore iconic cycling routes to the Formentor Lighthouse or the Cala Ratjada Lighthouse, swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, and take in the striking green landscapes of the Serra de Tramuntana.
And, of course, no visit is complete without discovering Mallorca’s outstanding cuisine, best enjoyed with a glass of local wine.
A lesser-known training spot…
- For cyclists staying in Alcudia, Florit recommends venturing beyond the most popular routes to explore the area around Valldemossa, Deià and Coll de sa Pedrissa.
An essential taste of Mallorca…
- One of his favourite local specialities is coca de trampó, a traditional savoury flatbread topped with fresh seasonal vegetables. Made with tomato, green pepper and onion on a crisp, golden base, it is a staple of Mallorcan summer cuisine. At the buffet restaurants across Zafiro Hotels, guests can enjoy coca de trampó alongside other island favourites such as panades and pa amb oli.
Next steps
Fresh from claiming victory in one of the most prestigious triathlon events on the calendar, the Mallorcan champion is already focused on the challenges ahead. His next targets include IRONMAN Tallinn on 22 August and a potential appearance at IRONMAN Barcelona on 4 October, with the goal of earning valuable points for the national ranking and securing his PRO licence.
From all of us at Zafiro Hotels, we wish him every success in the exciting journey ahead!
