Located on the fertile plains of Mallorca overlooking the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, Muro is a place with many centuries of history, reflected in its pretty squares, ancient churches and monuments. The streets are a perfect setting for an early-evening walk, enjoying the peace and unhurried way of life.
This local Mediterranean way of life is reflected in its daily bustle, lively festivals and markets, where you can buy everything from typical handicrafts to fresh vegetables. The surrounding area is full of fields, vineyards and winding country roads, perfect for amateur cyclists. A trip towards the sea brings you to Playa de Muro, widely considered one of the best beaches in Europe. And next to that is S'Albufera, the largest wetland area in the whole of Mallorca.
What to see and do in and around Muro:
- Sant Joan Baptista Church: with a beautiful Gothic façade and an interior that reflects 400 years of history, it is located in the centre of town, next to Can Ribera by Zafiro.
- Ethnological Museum: ideal for learning more about what rural life was like in the past, including displays of numerous traditional Mallorcan artefacts.
- Muro Market: held every Sunday morning, providing a great chance to see, try and buy many typical island products.
- Playa de Muro Beach: considered one of the best in Europe due to its turquoise waters, sand dunes and excellent services. It is also the longest beaches on the island and one of the most unspoilt.
