The best beaches in Calvia

Mallorca & Menorca Guide

The coastline of Calvia is filled beaches and coves

In the municipality of Calvia, one of the most popular tourist areas in Mallorca and Spain, the beaches of Palmanova, Santa Ponsa and Peguera have all been awarded the blue flag and are fully equipped with amenities close by. This is area of the coast of Mallorca  has a wide choice of hotels  to choose from and has immense experience in the tourist sector  and of course the very  high standards that  are part of the attraction of  the Balearics and Spain in general.

The beach of Santa Ponsa is one of those great sandy beaches typical of Calvia, which are ideal if you are travelling with children, the beach is surrounded by hotels so it's like one big cove. Tourists and locals alike, even those from Palma de Mallorca, come to Santa Ponsa because of its spaciousness, calm waters and its grove of pine trees for those who like a bit of shade, it is not quite the typical cove of Mallorca but it’s certainly one of the best beaches in Calvia and only 20 minutes from Palma.

Hotels near the beaches of Calvia

Close to the Zafiro Rey Don Jaime, is the Santa Ponsa beach which has all the services that a tourist in Mallorca needs and expects and best of all is its   promenade, which has restaurants, leisure centres, artisan stalls and attractions for the younger tourists in need of some adrenalin. Just ask at the tourism information point to find out about the best activities available.

The beach of Santa Ponsa has a very good  atmosphere  at night  especially during the summer when the evenings are refreshing there are beach concerts and different shows almost every night, especially during  late summer when the celebrations are held  to  commemorate the conquest of Mallorca by King Jaume I who landed at Santa Ponsa in 1229 with the intention of conquering the moors because he thought the beach seemed a very suitable place to land.

Beaches for all the Family in Calvia

Palmira beach in Peguera is quite similar to Santa Ponsa, it is one of those wonderful sandy beaches ideal for children, a bit smaller than Santa Ponsa, with crystal clear and calm waters, especially in the morning and  again has a very good atmosphere at night. The beach of Peguera has all the services you need and it is very well maintained. It is popular with the  tourists because of  the quality of its waters, its security and the high standard of services it offers.

The beach of Palmanova is closer to Palma and extends out in front of the Zafiro Palmanova. It is  of just over a kilometre long, which makes it one of the best beaches in Mallorca for quiet walks along its shore line. It is another of those beaches of fine white sand, so typical of Mallorca and located in the urbanization of the same name Palmanova in Calvia. Palmanova is known for its wide range of hotels and services and the beach is of the same high standard as the rest of  Palmanova: you can rent sunbeds and  beach umbrellas, pedal boats for the sea and  it even offers the chance of going in semi-submersible and  all other types  of nautical activities.

Calvia, one Spain’s top destinations

Calvia also has little hidden coves which are located  far away  from the mundane noise that are  worth visiting if what you want is a respite from it all. Es Caló des Monjo is the natural border between Calvia and Andratx in the west of Mallorca. It is a small rocky cove with crystal clear water with no hotels around there are never many people, which is why it is a nudist beach, ideal for relaxing  and easily accessed  by car until you reach Cala Fornells from here you need follow a simple path for about 1km until you reach  Caló des Monjo. Also, near to Cala Fornells we find another isolated cove which is easy to get to   Caló de ses Llises is  a pebble  beach surrounded by high cliffs, there is huge rock in the water which is used as platform for swimmers, it is located in a residential zone and very quiet.

The unmissable beaches of Calvia

There are still plenty more sandy beaches worth visiting, such as the beach at Portals Vells, very close to the hotel Zafiro Palace Palmanova. The first of the three beaches of the village of  Portals Vells, is the most well-known, here at Portals Vells beach you will find a  restaurant, umbrellas and  hammocks to rent  and  it also has disabled access. On foot from here you can get to the beach of El Mago, the first nudist beach in the municipality of Calvia, it is a cove with a story to tell it was named after a 1960´s movie “ The Magician”,  which was shot on location at the beach, starring Anthony Quinn and Michael Caine. Another beach worthy of a visit is the King's Beach, a fine-grained sandy beach with clear and calm waters.

A small cove with a pine forest  where it´s ideal  have a picnic or to take a good nap in the shade. Finally, there is  the beach of Cala Fornells a corner of Calvia that maintains the  tranquillity  that is so typical of Mallorca and the Balearics. If you are looking forward to a calm, quiet holiday then head to Cala Fornells. In short, Calvia, with all its tourist resorts and a coastline full of beaches and coves is one of the most favourite destinations for  tourists  that visit  the Balearics and Spain, visitors return again and again to Calvia.
