Weather in Mallorca

Mallorca & Menorca Guide

If you are looking for warm temperatures and enjoy the sea breeze, Mallorca is your vacation destination. Come and enjoy the subtropical climate of the island.

The weather in Mallorca

Warm temperatures and sea breezes Mallorca climate is typically Mediterranean, characterized by more or less soft, warm temperatures in winter and hot summers which can be enjoyed on the island thanks to the offshore breeze that comes from the Mediterranean. In Mallorca we have on average warm temperatures and seasonal rainfall. The island´s climate is, without doubt, one of its strongest attraction for tourists who every year come to visit this piece of Balearic Paradise. Its climate lies within the category of subtropical temperature, which means that, as we stated above, summers are very hot and not too long, and usually winters are quite temperate.

Although there are on occasion some exceptionally cold spells which allows us to see the majestic snow-capped Tramuntana Mountains which in itself is an incredible sight to see!

When does it rain in Mallorca?

The truth is that in Mallorca it is very difficult to be exact on how much rainfall there is from one year to the next. The rainfall in Mallorca is distinguished by its irregularity, varying considerably from one year to another. A year of abundant rains can be followed by a year or two of drought.

Most of the rainfall occurs over a few days, with intense and sometimes very dense rainfall in autumn and the rest of the year with very little rainfall. The driest season in Mallorca is the summer, in which precipitations decrease considerably; 40% of the total annual precipitations fall during the autumn, from September to November, 25% in spring from March to May with the same amount in winter from December to February and in summer a mere  10% from June to August. Annual rainfall fluctuates from one place to another on the island from 350 mm in the South to 1,500 mm in high mountain areas of the Sierra de Tramuntana. But in most places on the island it ranges between 450 and 650 mm.

Temperatures in Mallorca

Pure luxury Mallorca has approximately 300 days of sunshine a year! The summer is always hot and sunny, ideal for a day on the beach.

But you can also enjoy a great holiday in the spring and autumn months when the temperature is particularly suitable for doing sport. Every season on the island brings its own special touch, even the winter. In February the almond trees blossom as we move forward to the spring and the fields full of trees with beautiful pink blossom are so beautiful to see and the days are ideal for walking and doing other activities outside in the lovely fresh air. The annual average temperatures, with the exception of the high mountains are between 16 and 18 ° C. Maximum summer temperatures are 29 / 31 ° C, and the minimum temperatures in winter are 5 / 9ºc. However, this is just an average it is not unknown for the temperatures to peak above 35 ° C and in the winter fall below - 2 ° C.

In fact, occasionally the temperatures can get up to 41 ° C in summer and - 6 ° C in winter. The island of Mallorca is surrounded by a deep, closed and relatively warm sea with a surface temperature that reach 26 ° C in August and which does not fall below 14 ° C in winter, and with a deep sea temperature always above 13 ° C, a unique occurrence in the world It is this sea that laps our coasts, responsible for regulating the temperature and means that thermal seasonality is not as marked as it is on the mainland in the interior at the same latitude.

The Mallorcan breeze Embat is the name given in Mallorca to the sea breeze; a wind which arises at noon, coming from the sea towards the land, to refresh the atmosphere. According to the Atlas of les Illes Balears University of les Illes Balears:

“The daily recurrence of Embat is a consequence of the variations in temperatures. The wind blows from sea to land during the hours the sun is at its highest and its direction is reversed, though with less intensity at night".

In Mallorca during the warm season, a regime of Embats of marine origin is developed, which then converges at the center of the island. This regime helps to moderate the temperatures and determines the formation of clouds which occasionally bring rainfall”. The warm air rises from the land drawing cooler maritime air to the interior of the island. This has a positive on the weather in Mallorca, especially during the hot summers, as it means that the daytime temperatures in summer are fresher and cooler in the coastal areas.
